Once again, being the rebel computer user that I am, I get pushed out of the knowing world. I have finally gotten through to the ASDL company and got my user name etc., so that I could check my MB usage as well as throughput. Unfortunately, the nice little pop-up for MB usage merely says, I.E. needed. I use Firefox and Safari is the default browser as my computer is an Apple. They only support I.E. at this time– no matter that Firefox and Opera browser are used on the MicroSoft platform. Sigh. The throughput meter did work. It said I was at 94kbps; I can see that as the connection is a little faster than dial-up. On the upside, no viruses are affecting my iBook.

As you may know, I cleaned my computer, but it didn’t work. I thought I backed up my address book. Nada. I do have most emails on other accounts but physical addresses are gone. If you want me to have it, send it along. Otherwise, don’t expect any more postcards.

I am undertaking a momentous journey today. I have purchased a 40GB external hard drive and will dump all my data that did not come with the computer onto it. After that, I’ll do a clean install from a boot disk and add the new memory. I’ll then add new applications 1-by-1 and see what application could be the problem. The bad news will be if the memory doesn’t conflict with an application. May luck be with me…

I’ve got to get a few words down now. First, I’ve been this way and that lately, and I’ll put together a short travelogue come the weekend. Now, I’ve got to piss and moan about the 1GB of memory I bought direct from Apple. It seems the new memory conflicts with something else and continually funks up my machine. I’m back to using the base memory. I’ve posted to Apple Discussions and emailed the more adept Mac users that I know. They’re all stumped. Most are putting it down to a bad slot (which really doesn’t make sense because the computer recognizes the memory) or a bad logic board. The iBook works and will suffice for my work, but it won’t run fast. I want it to run fast. Dear me.
