The Statues & Cityscape

I finally did it. I took photos of most of the statues in Manado proper save one. The one I didn’t get was perhaps the most interesting. It was a statue promoting sports. The statue was a man clad in military dress with a holstered pistol. One fist was raised in the air similar to while the other rests near the stomach. I’m pretty sure the statue was constructed during the Soeharto era.

The ones I did get:

Horse statue with trophy

Unidentified statue in the city center

Lemmimut and his mother/wife-the mythic father of the Minahasan people. He pulled an Oedipus.

A woman and child and unbiquitous cigarette advertising

I recently read that Manado was bombed heavily during the WWII because the Japanese were occupying it.

A couple children at the entrance to an arts hall

# People climbing a tree to catch some birds

Sam Ratulangi, famous Minahasan freedom fighter

Footballers

And the cityscape:

Oldest Buddhist temple in Eastern Indonesia

A smaller Buddhist temple under construction

The lone bendi (horse taxi)

More bendi

The city center needs a coat of paint

Streetsweeper's cart

As for next year, I received a confirming email that the funding is available and I’ll be returning to Manado.

Tony, Binita and I really enjoyed your pics of Manado—especially the statues. Binita commented that she’s never seen concrete used so artistically. All the best!
